Connect YouTube

What YouTube needs, and how connecting works.

What you need

  • A YouTube channel. If your Google account has several channels (brand accounts), you choose one each time you connect.

Connect it

  1. In pickthepost, open Accounts and press Connect YouTube.
  2. Google's own page opens. Choose the Google account, then the channel, and allow what pickthepost asks for. While Google has not yet verified pickthepost, it first shows "Google hasn't verified this app": press Advanced, then Go to pickthepost.
  3. You come back to Accounts, with the channel listed as working, its subscribers and videos.

Connect each channel the same way. The very first time, the app shows a one-time setup (a Google client ID and secret); after that, Connect goes straight to Google.

Posting

YouTube takes one video per post. In Compose, the YouTube tab sets the title (the caption's first line unless you change it), who can see it (public, unlisted or private) and whether it is made for kids. The caption becomes the description and its hashtags become tags; a first comment goes under the video. An upright video under 3 minutes shows as a Short.

How connecting works

You approve pickthepost on Google's own page; your password never reaches pickthepost. The key lasts until you remove it, and the robot renews its short-term part by itself. Disconnecting in pickthepost also tells Google to cancel the access; you can also remove it at myaccount.google.com/permissions.

Check that it works

Open Accounts: the channel shows working. Press Check to test it again.
